Higurashi is a brutal bait-and-switch that lulls you into a false sense of security with wholesome school-life antics before violently pulling the rug out. It is a kinetic visual novel—meaning you have zero control over the outcome—that forces you to watch a descent into paranoia and madness. You aren't playing a game so much as reading a cursed diary, piecing together a gruesome mystery where your friends are the primary suspects and trust is a death sentence.
